Even though they are made of smooth muscle fibers, byssal muscles share some of the same characteristics as vertebrate skeletal muscle. Byssal muscles show individual muscle twitches, mechanical summation, and tetanus.

In this experiment, students will record the phasic and tonic responses of a byssal muscle to individual
and repeated stimulus pulses, and the effects of the direct application of acetylcholine and serotonin to
the muscles.
