Definitions

  • Root Mean Square (RMS) – The most common method for quantifying EMG amplitude. RMS reflects the power of the EMG signal by squaring, averaging, and taking the square root of the signal. It produces a smooth, easy-to-interpret envelope commonly used for assessing muscle activation intensity.
  • Maximum Voluntary Contraction (MVC) – A widely used measure of maximum muscle force output during a voluntary effort. In EMG analysis, MVC is the reference condition used for normalization.
  • Average Rectified Value (ARV) – The average of the rectified EMG signal (all negative values flipped to positive). It reflects overall muscle activation and neural drive. ARV correlates strongly with RMS, but RMS tends to be higher due to squaring, and is more sensitive to larger amplitude spikes.
  • Threshold – Threshold analysis is performed on the RMS channel to segment EMG into periods of activity vs. inactivity. A user-defined amplitude threshold determines when muscle activation begins and ends.
  • Teager-Kaiser Energy – Measures the amount of energy in an EMG signal at a single point (no averaging). It can emphasise rapid changes in amplitude or frequency.
  • Power Spectral Density (FFT) – Breaks down the signal into high and low-frequency spectral components.
  • Mean (MNF) and Median (MDF) Frequency – The two most widely used frequency-domain metrics for assessing muscle fatigue. As muscles fatigue, the power spectrum typically shifts toward lower frequencies.
  • Peak Frequency (PKF) – The frequency at which the EMG power spectrum reaches its maximum value.
  • Mean Power (MNP) – It is the average spectral power across the frequency bandwidth.
  • Total Power (TTP) – The total power contained within the EMG spectrum, often obtained by integrating the PSD over the frequency band.
  • Frequency Ratio (FR) – The ratio of low-frequency power to high-frequency power. A shift toward lower frequencies can indicate fatigue or relaxation, while a shift toward higher frequencies can indicate increased activation or recruitment of fast-twitch motor units.

Time Domain Analysis

  • Root Mean Square (RMS)
    • Regarded as the most common method for assessing the amplitude of the EMG signal, as it offers a measure of the signal’s power and generates a waveform that is easy to analyze
  • Maximum Voluntary Contraction (MVC)
    • A widely used measure of muscle strength in research. It represents the greatest force a person can voluntarily produce, reflecting their maximum effort
  • (Average) Rectified EMG Data
    • For determining the overall strength of the neural drive to the muscle and is correlated with both the strength of muscle contraction and its output
  • Threshold
    • For the detection of muscle activity timing in EMG signals
  • Teager-Kaiser
    • Measures the amount of energy in an EMG signal
  • Area Under The Curve
    • For determining the compound motor action potential (CMAP) and other measurements
  • Envelope EMG Data
    • A classic method of measuring muscle contraction
  • Filtering
    • User controlled high pass and low pass filters

  • Power Spectral Density (FFT)
    • Breaks down the signal into high and low-frequency spectral components
  • Mean (MNF) and Median (MDF) Frequency
    • The most valuable and commonly used frequency-domain features for assessing muscle fatigue in surface EMG signals
  • Peak Frequency (PKF)
    • Frequency at which the maximum EMG power occurs
  • Total Power (TTP)
    • Total amount of power used over time
  • Mean Power (MNP)
    • The average power of EMG power spectrum
  • Frequency Ratio (FR)
    • Differentiate between contraction and relaxation of muscle and it is defined as the ratio of power spectrum at low-frequency band and high-frequency band
