REACH-DL Distance Learning System

The REACH-DL is a home-based lab kit designed for distance learning and online students. The kit contains the sensors, recording software, and write-ups to perform over 15 core experiments introducing your students to the fundamentals of cardiovascular, neuromuscular and respiratory physiology.

Each exercise is laid out in a step-by-step, simple-to-use fashion, allowing your students to perform hands-on experiments at home, easily analyze their findings, and generate a report.

REACH-DL includes:

  • REACH Physiological Recorder
  • LabScribeDL Recording and Analysis Software
  • Set of 5 snap leads?for ECG/EMG and Respiration (C-ISO-SL5)
  • 50 electrodes ECG/EMG/Respiration Electrodes (A-ELEC-50)
  • Kit Box (A-KB-REACH)

Charles Zwemer from Dickinson Colleges solves the online challenges using the iWorx REACH-DL

The REACH-DL system is keyed to the HAPS Learning Goals and Outcomes.
Labs that can be performed with this system:

Quick Start
Quick Start: Learn how to use LabScribeDL and the iWorx systems using pulse.
Heart
ECG – Rest & Recovery: Record an Electrocardiogram (ECG) and study the effects of exercise on an ECG and pulse.
ECG – Exercise & O2 Saturation: Record an Electrocardiogram (ECG) and O2 Saturation and examine the relationship between the ECG and the percentage of O2 in the blood.
ECG – Temperature & Arm Position: Record an Electrocardiogram (ECG) and examine the relationship of the ECG to the peripheral circulation.
Diving Reflex: Study the mammalian diving reflex and the effect on pulse.
Muscle
Grip Force: Measure EMG Grip Force. Study the effect of fatigue.
Muscles in Opposition: Measure EMGs from antagonistic muscle groups.
Electrooculogram (EOG): Measure Electrooculogram (EOG)and study muscle activity while doing a variety of different tasks including pursuit and saccades.
Electrogastrogram (EGG): Compare Electrogastrogram (EGG) on an empty and full stomach.
Targeted Exercise: Measure EMG in ‘active’ muscle groups to make sure that the exercise routine is being done properly.
Reflexes
Eyes vs. Ears: The study of whether sight or sound stimuli cause a faster reaction time.
Color Test: Measure reaction times to visual stimuli of different colors.
Breathing
Rest & Recovery: Measure breathing depth and rate at rest and during recovery from exercise.
Exercise & O2 Saturation: Measure breathing depth and rate, and O2 saturation at rest and during recovery from exercise.
Breathing & Body Position: Examine the effects of gravity on breathing by measuring the differences in breathing depth and rate while resting and while sitting, standing, or lying down.
Activities & O2 Saturation: Measure oxygen saturation levels in the blood during normal breathing, apnea, shallow breathing, and other parameters.
Psychology
EEG-CorticalArousal: Measure electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from the left and right cerebral hemispheres.
StroopEffect: Demonstrate the Stroop Effect. Study the effect of color stimuli on reading words

The iWorx Hybrid Learning Model

The following guide is designed to highlight how to combine virtual and in-person hands-on laboratory learning using iWorx equipment.

iWorx Hybrid Class Structure using the REACH-DL

A Hybrid Model can be used using both the iWorx TA Teaching kit as well as the iWorx REACH-DL Distance Learning System.  Students that are learning in person on campus/in the laboratory will use the TA teaching kit – working in groups of 3 to 4 students.  Students that are learning remotely will complete laboratory exercises using the REACH-DL distance learning system.

The REACH-DL is a home-based lab kit designed for distance learning and online students. Introducing them to the fundamentals of cardiovascular, neuromuscular and respiratory physiology. The kit contains the sensors, recording software, and write-ups to perform over 15 core experiments. Each exercise is laid out in a step-by-step, simple-to-use fashion, allowing your students to perform hands-on experiments at home, easily analyze their findings, and generate a report.

Hybrid Teaching Tips

To ensure your new hybrid course runs smoothly, here are some bonus hybrid teaching tips just for you:

  1. Don’t be afraid to redesign. The course map you created is not set in stone, as you move through the semester, lean into the strengths that arise and redesign to accommodate for any weaknesses that get exposed.
  2. Use online work to offer targeted learning plans, extensions, or one-on-one teaching for individual students.
  3. Provide mobile learning options for the online portion of your course.
  4. Be open to feedback, and really learn from your student’s experiences.
  5. Don’t overload on online assignments, just because they can be completed anywhere doesn’t mean they take any less time than face-to-face work.
  6. Integrate the online and the in-person. A successful hybrid course is only as strong as the relationship between its two halves.
  7. Embrace your hybrid community. If you find yourself stuck or frustrated, turn to other hybrid class instructors that you respect: their experience and wisdom are priceless.
  8. Explain the purpose and expectations of your hybrid class clearly and often. If this format is new to you, there is a good chance it is new to your students as well.
  9. Provide students with self and time management tips so they aren’t left treading water as soon as they leave the classroom. This is especially helpful for students who have never completed online coursework before.
  10. Connect your students to a trusted IT hotline for any technical issues that may arise.
