Built for Physiological Research and Education

LabScribe is compatible with both Windows and Mac, so it integrates seamlessly into existing lab systems. The software is included with all teaching kits, and for research applications, it comes bundled with select data acquisition systems.

Free software updates ensure users always have access to the latest features, while flexible lab site licensing is cost-effective for classrooms and research teams. With simple data import and export capabilities, collaboration and data sharing are effortless.

LabScribe Key Features and Capabilities

Acquire Data

Chart and Scope Recording Modes

Record data continuously using Chart mode, or as sweeps using the Scope mode.

Easy Calibration of Data

Easily convert signals into physical units such as grams, mmHg, or PSI. Use simple two-point calibration or more advanced multipoint nonlinear calibration.

Preset Settings and Protocols

Settings files can be preset or created based on experimental protocols. Several settings files are already available for student labs and many research applications. The number of input channels, calibration parameters, graph settings, computed channels, views, and analysis protocols are all saved to a settings file. These files can be easily loaded from the LabScribe toolbar or imported manually.

Built-In Stimulator

LabScribe supports a range of pacing and stimulation protocols through a built-in stimulator interface, allowing delivery of single, continuous, or train pulses. Pulse duration, frequency, and amplitude can be adjusted during the protocol. Available protocols include Pulse, Train, Step, S1–S2–S3, Sine Wave, Square Wave, Constant, and Custom Time-Voltage.

Digital Inputs and Outputs

The software offers full control of digital I/O lines that can be used to count events or control devices in the lab environment.

Display

Marks

Place text marks in the data during or after recording. Preset marks can be created and inserted via function keys, and they remain searchable and time-locked to the record. Marks appear on the relevant data segment and allow you to quickly “Go To” any marked region. They can be assigned as keyboard shortcuts for all channels or specific channels, making annotation fast and easy. Marks can also be added and saved while analyzing data in post-processing.

Views

LabScribe offers a customizable display where users can save preferred channel selections, display times, and axis settings as viewing templates. The Views feature lets you create clean, focused layouts by choosing exactly which raw or computed channels to show—ideal for setups like monitoring four animals with separate BP and HR views. Easily switch between views with a single click.

Meters

Numerical data can be displayed in a meter window as a digital value during data collection. This feature enhances the acquisition experience by providing summary data from the traces being collected. User-defined settings provide the option to display various parameters from input traces, such as mean, minimum, maximum, amplitude, rate, etc. The frequency with which the value updates can be set by the user.

XY View

Any two channels can be displayed in XY format, online or offline. XY windows can be undocked and free-floating or can be re-positioned and docked in different locations on the screen.

Analysis

Calculated Channels

LabScribe supports up to 128 simultaneous calculated channels, allowing users to convert raw signals into quantitative measurements in real time or during offline analysis. In addition to periodic calculations such as rate, minimum, maximum, mean, and frequency, the software includes over 50 built-in functions for physiological data analysis. These functions support calculations such as integrals, derivatives, channel math, spirometry parameters (ATP, STPD, VO2, RER), and digital filtering or smoothing (high-pass, low-pass, band-pass, notch, moving averages, and Savitzky-Golay). Additional tools provide specialized analyses, including ECG and blood pressure metrics, EEG frequency band isolation, and signal processing methods such as autocorrelation, time shifting, and template matching.

Data Analysis

LabScribe’s Analysis Window allows users to analyze selected regions of data by placing two cursors around an area of interest. The software then performs calculations on that segment, ranging from basic values such as maximum, minimum, and mean to more advanced functions like derivatives, integrals, and specialized analyses for signals such as ECG, blood pressure, and spirometry. Users can also compare repeated events using scope overlays or averaged sweeps, and send calculated values to the built-in Journal or export them to programs such as Excel or MATLAB.

FFT and Spectrum Analysis

The FFT Window converts time-domain recordings into frequency-domain plots with a single click, allowing users to view the amplitude and distribution of frequencies within a signal. Interactive cursors can be used to define a specific region of interest before generating the transform, and the frequency resolution can be adjusted down to 0.01 Hz. The software also provides automatic spectral measurements, including peak frequency, maximum power, and mean frequency. These measurements can be sent to the built-in Journal for documentation.

Automation

Macros: Automate Tasks

The Macro feature allows users to automate repeated or time-sensitive tasks by programming the software to perform actions such as delivering stimulus protocols, controlling external digital devices, saving and naming sequential files, or presenting visual and auditory cues through the Experiment Builder. Macros can include loops, timed delays, and conditional statements to support complex experimental workflows without manual input. They also enable automated stimulator adjustments, pulse delivery, and hardware control, while the integrated Experiment Builder can present text, images, colors, or media to subjects and record their responses for behavioral or stimulus-response experiments.

Find and AutoFind

Users can define specific search criteria, and the software will automatically scan the entire file to locate every matching event—such as all R-waves in an ECG. Once set, Auto Find moves through the data to bracket each event, perform selected calculations, and log the results directly to the Journal or an export file, reducing the need for repetitive manual analysis.

Export

Exporting Data

Raw recordings or selected regions can be exported directly from the Main or Analysis Windows into standard formats such as Excel (.xls), MATLAB (.mat), plain text (.txt), or European Data Format (.edf). Export settings allow full data output or down-sampling to averages, maximums, or minimums for large files. High-resolution images of graphs, FFT plots, or analysis screens can also be exported as .png or .jpg for presentations, manuscripts, or Journal reports.

Journal

LabScribe includes a Journal, which is very similar to a text editor. Text can be entered and edited in the Journal area, and images of traces and graphs from the raw data and computed channels can be copied to the Journal. In addition to images, data values from the Main and Analysis Windows can be added to the Journal. The Journal can be printed, and its contents can be copied and pasted into other applications. The Journal includes a table view and an editor view, making it easy to organize numerical data (table view) and generate graphical reports (editor view). The Journal can be undocked and free-floating or can be re-positioned and docked in different locations on the screen.
